Why Is My Boiler So Noisy in Zebulon, NC?

The boiler in your Zebulon, NC home works by heating water, then distributing either the hot water or steam through a system of pipes. If this system suddenly begins producing any odd or unusual noises, it may be in danger of failing and leaving you out in the cold. Therefore, we’d like to explain some of the strange and ominous noises that your boiler might be producing.

Banging

Banging noises usually arise from one of two sources: ignition delays or kettling. Various issues, including an insufficient supply of gas, dirty burners and a weak or dysfunctional pilot light, may create ignition delays in your system. A team of trained technicians may clean your burners and pilot light as part of a periodic maintenance check-up, but additional work may be necessary to determine the source of any banging noises and put a definitive stop to them.

The term “kettling” refers to a situation in which the flow of water through your boiler slows down, causing it to heat excessively and create tiny bubbles while inside the heat exchanger. After drifting away from the heat exchanger, the bubbles may pop and create either a persistent banging or whistling sound. Once again, there are many causes of this behavior, but some prominent ones include limescale build-up, low water pressure and even a malfunctioning thermostat.

Vibrating

If vibrating noises start coming from your boiler, the likeliest explanations include loose brackets, panels, screws, bolts, pipes or other components. Technicians can tighten up each of these things for you during a tune-up. Alternatively, there might be a problem with your boiler’s circulating pump, which will require more extensive intervention to correct.

Gurgling

Gurgling sounds reliably is a sign that air bubbles have entered your boiler’s radiators. To take care of this issue, you will need to bleed your radiator’s lines using a radiator key. If you’re unsure of how to bleed the radiator’s line, please contact a professional to do it.
